other作名词时,意为“其他的人或事物”,有数和格的变化.单数前加定冠词表特指(意为“两者中的另一个”,如例1).复数others前加定冠词表特指（意为“剩下的/其余的人或物”,如例2）,不加冠词则表泛指（意为“其它的人或物”,如例3）.作形容词时意为“其他的”,后面接复数名词,如例4.
1.She has two sons.One is a teacher,and the other is an engineer.
她有两个儿子.一个是教师,另一个是工程师.（特指）
2.Six of the toys are mine; the others are John’s.
六个玩具是我的,其余的是约翰的.（特指）
3.Don’t worry about others.不要担心其他人.（泛指）
4.We can try some other ways.我们可试试其它的方法.
another意为“另一”,“再一”,可修饰单、复数名词,前面不可以用冠词.例如：
I don’t like this one.Can you give me another?
我不喜欢这个,能否给我另一个?
We will study here for another two years.我们将在这儿再学习两年.
another表示三个或三个以上中的另一个；other
表示两个中的一个。

another是有范围的，是特指的。比如你有两个姐姐，一个叫美丽，一个叫漂亮，用英语说的时候，I have two sisters,one's name is beautiful,another is called “pretty”.
other就随便了。
不知道这样解释行不行，我们老师就是这样教的。
