Christmas是由christ和-mas(即:Mass)两词合成的.Christ系源自于犹太的希伯来语(Hebrew Messiah)一词,汉语音译为"弥赛亚"."弥赛亚"是犹太人期待的"救世主".该词这一层意思是:The one/new baby was sent from God.(新生圣婴被上帝派送于世.)希腊人将Messiah只译了一层意思:christ(救世主).后一半mas来自罗马拉丁语missia,英语写成Mass.Mas(s)意为to send.两词合成后,意为:the sending of the sent one/ new baby或The sent one/new baby has been sent by God.(应派送的人已由上帝派出了.)所以现在英语里有go to Mass(望弥撒)的词语.
以后由christ又衍生出christian一词,据说这样译才包含了Messiah的全部语义.其全义是:The new baby was born at Christmas and the man he grew up to be.(圣婴诞生于耶诞弥撒日,以后成长为人世之主.)"耶诞弥撒日"到底在哪月哪日.直到公元4世纪左右才将每年12月25日定为"耶稣诞辰日".英国在13世纪以前一直将这一天当作一年的开始,因此圣诞节期(Christmas-tide/Christmas-time)的全程日期是从12月24日至下一年1月1日或1月6日.源始于此.
正因为英美人将此日视为"纪念耶稣诞生的弥撒日",所以有的辞书上注释为:Christmas is the time of the sending of Christ.或Christmas celebrates the time when Christ was sent by God.
