Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance or nature's changing course untrimmed
But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest;
Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou growest:
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this and this gives life to thee.

：莎士比亚的第18首十四行诗的一个重要语言特点是它的修辞格的运用,一首短短的十四行诗里面,竟然用到了十种修辞格,分别包括明喻,设问,暗喻,拟人,双关,矛盾法,头韵法,提喻,夸张,倒装.内容上,在这首诗中,诗人对时间的毁灭作用进行了深刻的反思,并以此来反衬他的诗篇的生命力.他认为,尽管时间的力量强大,但他的诗篇可以战胜时间的消磨赢得永生.那样,他诗中歌颂的情人也会美艳永存.美好的夏日因而十分短暂,而诗中情人的美却是永生的.因此,诗中透露出诗人对他的诗作生命力的无比自信.
